Brendan Murphy

2008
Workshop: Furniture

A talented young musician and artist, Brendan developed his passion for wood craftsmanship by making stringed instruments. In his final undergraduate year he made a beautiful hybrid acoustic/electric guitar. During his honours year (2008) he undertook part time studies of the Persian language Farsi in order to read and understand the making of setars. After crafting a setar, he set about designing and making an entirely new instrument influenced by the features of the guitar and the setar. Brendan entered the new instrument in the 2009 Cheongju International Craft Biennale. The instrument was acquired; he won a significant award, and was given return airfares and accommodation in Korea to attend the Biennale and receive his prize. Brendan now makes stringed instruments at his workshop near Young, NSW.
