Core Studies
Core Studies, taken by all Undergraduate students, aims to enhance and develop the basic skills essential to a career in the visual and design arts. These skills include drawing, problem solving, image making, design, three dimensional construction and critical thinking. The dynamics of colour, design, composition and pictorial space are investigated and contemporary and historical image-making methods and materials, including basic photo-technology and digital media are taught. Through the use of media ranging from computers to charcoal, students investigate drawing materials and develop sound technical skills and are encouraged to take advantage of the School's various computer labs which provide facilities for digital image making, 3D design and computer-based research. The development of safe work practices is an integral part of the program and students consider structural systems and conceptual approaches used in both Western and non-European traditions. The Art Theory component running parallel to Core Studies enables students to develop necessary critical and analytical skills, as well as providing an introduction to the issues, key historical periods and the specialised vocabulary used in discussing art.
