Overview

The Digital Fabrication Lab, operated by the ANU School of Art Furniture workshop, features a $180,000 facility that includs a laser cutter and CNC routing machine. The Digital Fabrication Lab has broad interdisciplinary support, and is vital to the ANU School of Art moving forward as a leader in Art, Craft, and Design

The facility has been funded in large part by an ANU Major Equipment grant with additional support from a broad range of disciplines, including ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences, ANU College of Engineering & Computer Science, and the Research School of Physics & Engineering.

This technology, now standard to conventional design and manufacturing, greatly improves the research environment both through efficiency and fantastic capacity for innovation. Accessibility, familiarity, and exploration of Digital Fabrication would be a boon to creative research, and is critical for art and design researchers in this day and age. The chief investigators, Ashley EriksmoenGilbert RiedelbauchRohan NicolRichard Whiteley, and Pasty Payne are already utilising Digital Fabrication technologies and have all made significant contributions to the School of Art research outcomes through exhibiting and publishing nationally and internationally.

Equipment

Trotec Speedy 500 Laser Cutter

The 1200 x 700 mm Trotec Speedy 500 Laser Cutter uses a high-powered laser directed by a computer to process a wide variety of materials common to art and design.  It is particularly suited to precise cutting and engraving a broad range of thin, and more flexible materials too fine to withstand CNC routing, making it perfect not only for many finished products/artworks, but also ideal for scale models of larger objects.

Multicam CNC Routing Machine

The 2500 x 1300mm CNC Router is able to cut and shape larger parts from thicker, denser, and more rigid materials that the laser cutter cannot penetrate, allowing full scale prototyping and realization of artworks.  Together, the two machines allow a sequencing of design concept verification from model to product as well as innovative forays into complex solid to surface development, an exciting yet under explored area in visual arts practice-led research.

The following materials list CANNOT be processed with the Laser Cutter:

  • Polyurethane (PUR)
  • Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
  • Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB)
  • Polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE)
  • Any materials containing Epoxy
  • Phenolic

Materials that can be processed:

The following materials list CAN be processed with the Laser Cutter:

  • Acrylic
  • Painted Metal
  • Delrin
  • Stainless Steel (with Thermark)
  • Anodized Aluminium
  • Veneer
  • Handicrafts
  • Glass
  • Wood
  • Gum Rubber
  • Ceramic

Cutting Size:

Maximum Material Size: 1270 x 710mm (L x W)

Students are encouraged to supply their own material.

Cost:

Minimum charge of $20 – setup and 5 minutes of cut time included in minimum charge (plus GST for

external clients)

$2.00 per minute run time after initial 5minutes (plus GST for external clients).

$120.00 per hour to fix or alter drawings (plus GST for external clients). 

 

Multicam CNC Routing Machine

Materials that cannot be processed:

The following materials list CANNOT be processed with the CNC:

  • Stainless Steel, etc.
  • Mild Steel, etc.

Materials that can be processed:

The following materials list CAN be processed with the CNC:

  • Plywood
  • MDF
  • Most Composites
  • Alucobond
  • Acrylic
  • Aluminium

The CNC Router also has a knife attachment for cutting foams, etc.

Maximum Material Size: 2400 x 1200mm (L x W)

Cost:

$75.00 per hour set up time (plus GST for external clients).

$1.25 per minute cut time (plus GST for external clients).

$120.00 per hour to fix or alter drawings (plus GST for external clients).
