Facilities

ToolsThe newly refurbished Gold and Silversmithing Workshop is at the cutting edge of technology in Australia for contemporary metal practice. The well-resourced workshop has facilities for most metalworking techniques including hot and cold forming, the machining of metals and plastics, advanced welding facilities including a new LaserStar laser welder, as well as induction metal casting equipment. Finishing techniques such as polishing, bead blasting, electroplating and anodising are also provided for. In addition to this, it was the first Australian art and design school studio to house a rapid prototyping facility. Based on the fused deposition process developed by Stratasys in the US, the School of Art facility allows the development of large prototypes, forming tools and master patterns.

Each student is allocated an individual workspace and is expected to be fully involved in Workshop activities such as equipment and tool maintenance. The small student numbers in Gold and Silversmithing ensures a highly effective and intense working environment. In addition, through the Complementary Studies Program, students can access the resources of other Workshops within the School of Art including the three dimensional modelling and design facilities offered by the School's computer-based courses including the Applied Design/Product Design course.
