International Exchange

Yuka Sakai, Waiting for Rain

Through the International Exchange Program, students have the opportunity to study at University Schools of Art and Design in Asia, Europe, Canada and North America. An exchange student is one who exchanges places at an institution recognised by the School, to work under supervision for a stated period of time without payment of fees. All exchanges require the agreement of both the home and receiving institutions. Fees continue to be paid to the home institution. Students are responsible for financing their accommodation, travel, living expenses and the cost of any necessary materials while on an exchange visit.

Student exchanges may be undertaken by both undergraduate and postgraduate students with the recommended length of the exchange being one semester. Undergraduates should plan to go on exchange during second year or the first semester of third year; approval will not be given for exchange during second semester, third year or during an Honours year. Although there is no formal deadline for applications, students are advised to apply at least one semester in advance of their proposed date of departure.

Intending applicants should discuss their proposals with their Head of Workshop and also with the School Adminstrator. Applicants should prepare a portfolio to support their application, including digital images of their work on CD, documentation of their academic progress, a detailed proposal for their study including a clear statement of their reasons for wishing to undertake the exchange, and letters of support from Head of Workshop and other lecturers

Three Travelling Scholarships - the Westende, Nigel Thomson and Margaret and David Williams Scholarships - are awarded each year to assist selected School of Art students with their overseas travel.
