Graduate Student Conference I

CJ Taylor - The archeology of the bush, 2013, Pigment print, acrylic glass mount

As the first semester of the academic year draws to a close and undergraduate students look forward to a mid-semester break after their assessments, spare a thought for the School of Art Graduate students who work tirelessly throughout the year.

For them there are two very important opportunities each year where they meet as a group and discuss their research at the School of Art Graduate Student Conference.

The first of the 2014 conferences was held on June 2 and 3 and was for students studying either a Master of Philosphy (MPhil) or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The Graduate Student Conference provides a chance for these students to present papers, receive feedback, and form networks with other researchers.

The program had a typically stimulating and diverse array of presentations including papers from: Susan Buret (MPhil, Painting); Patricia Stone (PhD, Art History); CJ Taylor (PhD, Photography and Media Arts); Claudia Chaseling (PhD, Painting); Julia Yang (PhD, Ceramics); Lea Douglas (PhD, Glass); Fiona Peng (PhD, Ceramics); Stephanie Parker (PhD, Photography and Media Arts); Anni Doyle Wawrzynczak (PhD, Art History); Tim Thomas (PhD, Photography and Media Arts); and Gillian Lumsden (MPhil, Gold and Silversmithing).

The program also included a keynote address by H.C. Coombs Creative Arts Fellow, artist and writer Kim Mahood, and an introduction by Convenor of the Higher Degree Research Program and Sir William Dobell Chair of Art History, Professor Helen Ennis. It was concluded with the opening of an exhibition, In Between at the Foyer Gallery by Bifei Cao, who is studying for his PhD in Gold and Silversmithing.
