The Photomedia Major

Focuses on the still image and teaches fundamental techniques such as digital and analogue photography; studio lighting; computer manipulation; and other experimental techniques. It also teaches aspects of video production and public and community art. We take our students beyond core photographic competencies and introduce them to the other skills they need to be fully-rounded image-makers in the twenty-first century.

In the Photomedia Major, full instruction in black and white, colour and digital photography is provided. In addition, students are encouraged to adopt a conceptually creative and intermedia approach. Digital video, interative multimedia and web sites, alternative photographic processes, and media relating to drawing and printmaking are all used within the Workshop.

A variety of additional structured programs and set projects are offered including, technical programs, specialist workshops and the history and theory of photography. In the latter semesters personal creative development is emphasised and students propose independent study programs.

Progress is monitored through individual tutorials, group critiques and reviews where work is presented to both staff and fellow students for critical appraisal. Regular field trips and visits to galleries and museums are organised each year.

The majority of graduates from the Photography and Media Arts Workshop, in addition to practising as independent artists, find employment in various fields of the arts industry, including new technology and photographic industries.
