Biography

Rowan Conroy  holds a PhD and first class Honours from Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. Conroy's PhD was awarded in 2012 for his thesis and major exhibition Archaeologies of the Present: Rephotographing the William John Woodhouse Photographic Archive. This research was the subject of a major exhibition in August to November 2013, at the Australian Centre for Photography. This body of work will be published as a limited edition photobook the second half of 2014.

Conroy's work focuses on the use of large format photography to document ancient and modern, rural and urban architecture and detritus as a means to reflect upon the archaeology of the present. He combines the use of traditional large format view cameras with the latest digital technology to produce photographic prints of great detail and clarity. Conroy has combined his interest in archaeology and the visual arts through archaeological illustration and photography, which has been made possible through ten years of involvement on excavations in Greece and Cyprus, and research journeys in Lebanon, Syria and Turkey.

Conroy continues to work closely with the University of Sydney’s Nicholson museum and the Australian Archaeological Institute in Athens (AAIA). A melding between the disciplines of art and archaeology continues to be the major focus of Conroy's practice and is clearly reflected in his extensive series the poetics of detritus andarchaeologies of the present consisting of large format photographs of urban landscapes, ruins, and detritus from around the world. Conroy has been the recipient of a numerous grants and has been short listed in a number of nationally significant arts prizes. His works are held in public and private collections across Australia and internationally.
