Simon Cottrell has regularly exhibited his jewellery and objects both locally and internationally since 1996 after completing a BA of Fine Arts and Honours in Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT University. He has since taught at both RMIT and Monash University. Using predominantly monel, all of Cottrell’s works are deliberately monotone in colour and surface, while the highly decisive forms are peculiarly resonant in the diversity of the dynamics between shape, structure and detail.

Full Biography

Simon Cottrell has regularly exhibited his jewellery and objects both locally and internationally since 1997 after completing a BA of Fine Arts and Honours in Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT University in Melbourne. In 2010 he completed of a Masters of Arts Research also at RMIT.

He has taught at RMIT and Monash University in Melbourne since 2002, and has been invited as a guest lecturer to many art schools and events across Australia and the USA and in New Zealand, Singapore, and the Netherlands.

For many years he has had an interest in the nature and theory of creative practice, in particular the inter-relationships between cognitively set aims and intuitive progression. Such insights are used as a means to devise forms that are both ‘of’ and ‘about’ the underlying pre-thought processes of creative action.

Using predominantly monel, a very hard nickel alloy, all of Cottrell’s works are deliberately monotone in colour and surface, while the highly decisive forms are peculiarly resonant in the diversity of the dynamics between shape, structure and detail.
