Tess’ installation work revolves around processes of making and the permeable skin between culture and nature. Since moving to Canberra in 1990 Tess achieved her Master of Arts in Sculpture, and has exhibited installations, coordinated large-scale community arts projects, received commissions for public artworks, and taught at the ANU School of Art & Design in the Centre for Art History and Art Theory and Foundation Studies.
Tess initially trained in Arts-Law at the University of Sydney. After further studies in visual arts, she exhibited widely, helped found Art Bulletin and First Draft Gallery and was a spokesperson for artists’ rights. Her work is in public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia.
