Workshop: Glass

After eight years of owning/ operating Studio Ramp LLC (a custom glass fabrication studio) with her husband Jeremy Lepisto in Portland, Oregon, George moved back to her hometown of Canberra, Australia in 2008. She is a graduate of Australia's prestigious Canberra School of Art glass workshop, during which she completed a residency at the Bullseye glass factory while still an undergraduate, later returning to work in the company's Research and Education department on projects with international glass masters. Mel is the current Artistic Programs Manager at Canberra Glassworks. She both teaches and continues making and exhibiting her own work nationally and internationally.

Procter Fellowship travels took her to three European cities that she had never visited, to study and research their mosaic masterworks. The first, was Istanbul, Turkey specifically see the Hagia Sophia, as it is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture as well as the Mosaic Museum (Great Palace Mosaic). The second city she visited was Venice, Italy, home to St Mark’s Basilica that contains 40 000 square feet of mosaics throughout the buildings’ walls, floors and ceilings. Finally her last stop was Ravenna, a city rich with mosaics adorning local basilicas.

Mel’s then undertook her residency at the School of Art for a month where she shared the discoveries of her travel with the students of the Glass Workshop
