Textiles
Textiles is one of the most exciting and diverse areas of contemporary artistic practice embracing new technologies, opportunities and career paths. The applications of textiles cover a broad range from a design-oriented emphasis, incorporating textile works for fashion or interior design, to expressive art forms which may encompass unique works, installation, and performance. Growth areas of employment for graduates are in art in public places, digital imaging and website design, environment and heritage interpretation, community cultural development and curatorial work. The School of Art Textiles Workshop provides courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels and facilities for students wishing to explore the broad range of textile studies, preparing them for careers in all aspects of the visual arts, design, and related areas. With the expertise of its academic staff, advanced technical facilities, and location close to Australia’s national collecting institutions, the ANU School of Art Textiles Workshop provides an excellent environment for study and research. Students receive full instruction in the diverse range of traditional and contemporary textiles, from weaving, tapestry and surface design to feltmaking, dyeing and embroidery. The Workshop promotes a creative and innovative approach to textiles in a contemporary context. Students develop a historical perspective and conceptual, creative and critical abilities through a program of academic study and practical work which is developed to meet students’ needs. Towards the end of their course students are encouraged to pursue their own goals to establish an artistic identity through self-directed projects developed in consultation with staff. Progress is monitored through individual tutorials, group discussion and reviews where work is presented to staff and fellow students for critical appraisal. Students are encouraged to participate in the range of exhibitions, seminars and workshops regularly initiated by the Textiles Workshop to develop skills and self confidence in communication and project organisation. Visits to galleries, design studios, textile factories, museums, workshops and other locations are organised as part of the program. This encourages students to connect with their professional field and learn about opportunities for future employment. For further information. Contact: Valerie Kirk.
